When Dr Johnson and his friend James Boswell visited the Hebrides in 1773 the people on the Isle of Skye performed a Dance they called ‘America’ to show their enthusiasm for Emigration. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries many thousands of Scots moved to America and this tour discusses the contribution some of them made, indeed they say that around 60% of American presidents had Scottish ancestry and 21 of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence were Scots or of Scots descent.
The American privateer ‘The Ranger’ appeared in this bay and plundered the house of the Earl of Selkirk. They still hover in the bay.
A report in the Edinburgh Evening Courant on the activities of John Paul Jones.
Sat 25th April 1778.
Our tour takes us to the Historic town of Stirling where we walk through the cobbled streets of the old medieval town and the old Graveyard, we visit the Church of the Holy Rood where King James the 6th of Scotland was crowned in 1567, and then Bannockburn Battlefield where a Scots army under the command of King Robert the Bruce defeated a huge English Army in 1314 to secure our independence. Our route then takes us to Callander House in Falkirk the home of the Livingston family, and also the site of the Battle of Falkirk in 1746. Another interesting stop is Dunfermline, the birthplace of Andrew Carnegie where we can still see the cottage he was born in.
All of these places have links with America so come along and find out why.
Along the way we will see other Historic sites which although they may not have links with America are still worth seeing, such as the Roman Wall (Antonines) this has now been awarded World Heritage Status, Stirling Castle, The famous Forth Bridges etc.
