Derek, We will always think of you with a smile. You brought the history of William Wallace, Robert The Bruce and Scotland to life. Thanks for a great day and wonderful memories.

A brief History of Stirling – Stirling lies at the heart of Scotland not only geographically but also historically and because of Stirlings strategic importance it has played a central role in much of the nations history. This was where the Scots forged their independence as a separate state with great victories over much larger English armies during the time of William Wallace and King Robert The Bruce. Stirling Castle was not just the greatest fortress in Scotland guarding the most important crossing point of the river Forth it was also a favoured residence of the Stuart Kings and Queens and within its walls are some of the finest medieval buildings in the country, including the Great Hall built by King James the IV in 1503 and the magnificent renaissance Palace built in 1540 by King James the V. Stirlings Town Wall was built in 1547 and is the finest surviving medieval town wall in Scotland, within the town wall lies the historic old town with its fine collection of ancient buildings including ‘Argyles Ludging’(1632), Cowanes Hospital (1638) and the Church of the Holy Rude, dating from 1456 which held the coronation of King James the VI in 1567. On the other side of the river stands the National Wallace Monument overlooking the scene of Wallaces great victory at the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Tour Description - Listen to the fascinating story of Stirling in the company of a local guide as we walk through the cobbled streets of the old medieval town and the old graveyard. Stirling was the key to the Kingdom, to hold Stirling was to control Scotland and inevitably the great struggle for independence took place here with the Battles of Stirling Bridge in 1297 and Bannockburn in 1314.  We visit these Historic Battlefields, the Castle, The Wallace Monument and the Church of the Holyrood (open summer only).

We also discuss the Roman invasion of Scotland and visit the ‘Antonine Wall’(site of). Then we have a look at a modern engineering marvel with a brief visit to the ‘Falkirk Wheel’, the only rotating boatlift in the world.

The Royal Palace at Stirling Castle is now open, having been restored to its original Renaissance splendour.
